autumn reminiscing over summer splitting

As I build this site in the sunny chill of a late November morning, I am reminded of the bright abundance of summer while I search through photos of days that came before.

This year I planted a few seeds and was offered a fruitful harvest of basil, especially.

So many basil plants sprouted up, giving me the chance to split and share them abundantly.

I split basil and strawberry plants in July heat, dirt under my nails and dropping into the openings of my shoes. I was gifted insight into roots that grew lush and long into potted soil and blessed with hot sun bringing a golden glow to my skin.

Even, or especially, in the midst of my concrete city this nature loving being finds ways to bond with the earth.

It’s been a particularly warm autumn this year and I only spotted my first patch of ice early this morning glazed across the plastic storage bin I keep on the fire escape. It’s 36 degrees Fahrenheit and sunny today, the last of November, and the chill in my fingertips let’s me know winter is near.

Yet the sun through my windows as I sit on the living room floor writing reminds me of the warmth of that July day where I communed with the plants and shared their wealth with neighbors.
